INDIAN INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IIIT), MANIPUR
To address the increasing skill challenges of the Indian Information Technology (IT) Industry, impart international level Information Technology (IT) Education in the State and to develop Manipur as a preferred destination for Information Technology related manpower and industry, the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Manipur was established by the Government of Manipur under the guidelines of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, with Manipur IT SeZ Project Development Company Ltd. (MIPDCO) and Manipur Development Society (MDS) as the Industry partners.
The Institute was approved to be established at Mayangkhang Ningthoupham Village, Senapati District (now Kangpokpi District) with its temporary campus at Mantripukhri, Imphal by the Manipur State Cabinet and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The Institute at present is being mentored by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati with Professor Amarendra Kumar Das from IIT-Guwahati being appointed as the Interim Director for IIIT-Manipur.
The 1st Academic Session of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Manipur commenced from July, 2015 from its temporary campus located at Mantripukhri, Imphal with the following 2 (two) courses :-
- B-Tech in (Computer Science & Engineering) and
- B-Tech in (Electronics & Communication Engineering).
A total of 25 students were admitted for the first Academic Session 2015-16 (1st Batch) and further, a total of 50 students were admitted in the Academic Session of 2016-2017 (2nd Batch). The number of students is expected to increase in the Academic session of 2017-18.
The Admission to IIIT-Manipur is purely on the basis of the All-India JEE (Main) examinations administered by CBSE and the seat allocation is through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Students aspiring to join IIIT-Manipur are required to qualify through JEE (Main) examinations and are required to apply through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).
It is also mandated that the Institute will introduce “Design and Manufacturing” disciplines soon to positively contribute to the Government of India’s Mission of Act East Policy and create a manufacturing hub in the South East Asia region. Further, in order to contribute to Human Resource Development of its neighbouring countries, IIIT-Manipur envisages spreading of IT education to its neighbouring country of Myanmar by providing required facilities to the students of that country to study in IIIT-Manipur through bi-lateral agreements.
The Institute in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology, Government of Manipur also conducts various trainings and short term courses for the IT Industry sector of Manipur in order to build up a critical mass of IT Manpower in the state of Manipur.
